What do you like most about your job and/or Jamail & Smith?
I have enjoyed the challenges of assignments that have been offered to me by the company. Jamail Smith is a pioneer and staple in our industry and is forever evolving to meet the needs of changing clients, which is necessary in our business. If you hold on it might be a Beautiful Ride.
What is your funniest memory of working at Jamail & Smith?
Let me tell you, if you were not able to participate in the company canoe trips that were taken over the last couple of summers it was an event not to be missed.
From Rob Peterpaul and Scott Jones in the recreation of the Sinking of The USS Minnow, AKA log jam canoe sinking, to the campfires stories of “I am King of the World” and the epic story of a particular employees’ Saturday night escapades with his best girl and a bottle of VIAGRA! Please book your reservations early these spots fill up quickly. LOL!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I have a love of the outdoors from the shooting sports to big game fishing.
Where are you from and where do you reside now?
I am a born Texan and grew up in the State of Louisiana. My wife Carmen, our 2 children Carolyna and Daniel and myself reside in The Woodlands north of Houston.
Tell us something unique about yourself that most people don’t know.
Prior to my children being born, I was a self professed, out of control adrenalin junkie. If it was not going fast, flying high or living dangerous I stayed home. Some of the craziness I took part in included motorcycle and Corvettes well above 170 Miles per hour; skydiving from 12,000 feet from a perfectly good airplane; doing 200 MPH barrel rolls and loops in an open cockpit bi-plane called a Pitts Special a specialty built stunt plane; whitewater rafting class 5 white water rapids in the jungles of Costa Rica after a heavy rainy season and scuba diving well beyond the depths any reasonable sane person should attempt!
Whew!

City of Leander Fire Station No. 3
Leander, Texas
Owner: City of Leander
Contract Value: $3MM
Project Manager: Heath Wilms
Superintendent: Mark Christensen
Jamail & Smith Construction will be celebrating the grand opening of the Leander Fire Station on July 10th. The 16,000 SF facility was constructed on-time and under budget in collaboration with Moman Architects. The fire station includes administrative offices and a learning center for in-house public training, complete with a burn tower.
|
|
|
|
|
| Funding for the fire station was approved in the 2007 bond election, however, the original design exceeded the City’s budget. The City later chose to re-procure the project using Design-Build as the contracting method and Jamail & Smith Construction was selected as the Design-Builder. Jamail & Smith Construction worked hand-in-hand with the owner to reduce the project cost, while retaining functional requirements, and was able to deliver the project within the original budget while maintaining the aesthetics of the initial design. Changes to the structural building envelope, the site work, air conditioning, electrical system, plumbing and interior finishes shaved $1.5MM off the project cost. By altering material selections, adjusting site grading and framing the facility conventionally versus using a proprietary system, Jamail & Smith Construction was able to give the City exactly what they envisioned for the right price, without sacrificing quality. Despite an entire month of weather delays, the project was completed ahead of schedule.
The City of Leander would not have been able to proceed with this project without the value engineering options and cost control measures implemented by Jamail & Smith Construction, lead by Eric C. Cooper. Close attention to detail and open communication with the owner enabled construction to move forward. Congratulations to the Austin Team!

Houston Police Department Museum entered to win design award from Texas Construction's Best
Jamail & Smith Construction recently completed a major renovation for the City of Houston. The project entailed the conversion of the HPD police station lobby into a museum to commemorate the department and it’s nearly 170 year history. The project will soon be entered to win a design award from Texas Construction Magazine’s Best of 2010. Together with Brave’ Architects, we will submit the project for consideration in the Cultural category (theaters, museums, cultural centers, libraries/archives). Submissions are due on July 26th with judging taking place throughout the month of August. Winners will be announced by September 1st.
This $263,000 renovation consisted of a complete build-out of shelves and case work for museum artifacts that represent the deep history and changing styles of the Houston Police Department.
|
|
|
Jamail & Smith Construction also built-out the gift shop area for the museum. The most notable construction that took place in the museum is the granite badge display case that was constructed to memorialize HPD’s fallen officers and display their badges in remembrance.
Jamail & Smith Construction worked closely with the museum’s curator to make sure the construction needs were being met throughout the project. Although there was a tight budget Project Manager - Kirsten Manning, Superintendent - Brent Flato and Estimator - Val Bankston held weekly meetings with the owner, architect and curator to make sure all selections were in line with the parameters. The end result is a first class museum in the heart of Houston’s downtown, and hopefully an award winning project for Jamail & Smith Construction! Way to go Houston Team!
