Brian Todd
Business Manager

How long have you been with Jamail & Smith?
Almost 2 1/2 years.

Give your title and describe your current role for J&S.
I am the Business Manager for all JOC projects in the Houston region. My duties include ensuring the project managers are obtaining the necessary number of bids in order to secure job success. I manage the procurement process and analyze ongoing jobs in an attempt to identify unforeseen cost increases so as to develop solutions to manage those increases. I manage Billings for our office and must ensure accuracy and timeliness for those Billings.

I examine overhead and job costs to determine if there are ways to reduce those costs therefore decreasing our cost of work and increasing profitability. I prepare various reports that detail finances as well as minority participation.

What do you like most about your job and/or Jamail & Smith?
I very much enjoy working at Jamail & Smith Construction. Everyone I work with is very nice and I have created many friendships. Every day brings new challenges.

What is your funniest memory of working at Jamail & Smith?
I cannot tell you. Too many people may be in trouble.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family. I am an avid cyclist both on and off road.

Where are you from and where do you reside now?
I was born and raised in The Woodlands area and currently reside across the highway from The Woodlands. The only time I lived anywhere else was in Huntsville while I was in college. I have two children, Daniel nine months and Madison who is four years old. I have been married to my lovely wife Monica for 13 years. She and I have been together since we were 14.

Tell us something unique about yourself that most people don’t know.
I'm fascinated by conspiracy theories. I invented some wind noise reduction shields for headphones only to discover that a patent has been issued six months before for an almost identical product. I have observed in the wild 28 of the 113 species of snakes in Texas.

The Right Response to a Bad Situation
Westfall Library - San Antonio, Texas

The San Antonio J&S team began work at the Westfall Library on August 17, 2009 with a set completion date of August 30th. The job was moving along as planned when two days before scheduled completion date, Luis Garcia received a call from his superintendent, Efrain Gomez, informing him of a roof leak that resulted from an overnight rain storm. There was rain damage and standing water throughout the interior of the library.

Without hesitation, they notified the subcontractors to get a restoration company onsite immediately to start extracting the water from the carpet. They quickly moved furniture and assessed the damage and placed the order to have needed material delivered and ready to install over the weekend.

They worked around the clock through the weekend to repair the damages in order to meet their scheduled completion date. With everyone's quick response and hard work, the Library was ready to open Tuesday September 1, 2009.

The good news does not stop there... In addition to the subcontractor accepting responsibility to pay the City for the damaged books, J&S recovered cost from the sub's insurance carrier to cover all of our costs, including labor and overhead.

The efforts of J&S employees, Luis Garcia and Efrain Gomez, along with the support of our responsive subcontractor, Jaco Construction Inc., made all the difference in keeping the claim cost low and mitigating the damage of this incident.

Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry
Jamail & Smith lends a hand to East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry

This holiday season, Jamail & Smith Construction supported the Fort Bend community by teaming with their neighboring subcontractors and vendors to support a local charity, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM). Jamail & Smith leveraged these relationships to raise $5,100 and matched the contribution to help EFBHNM fund their efforts to alleviate hunger and help families in need.

Connie Esposito, Community Outreach Coordinator for EFBHNM, commented, “We are so grateful for the generosity and support of Jamail & Smith Construction and all the subcontractors and vendors who contributed to this incredible donation. This has been a tough year for many in our community.”

The $10,200 donation was presented to Esposito at Jamail & Smith’s Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Fry at our Fort Bend Office located in Missouri City. “While so many families are feeling the need for a little support in these economic times, it was not only our pleasure to help but a responsibility we should all have for the community in which we work and live,” said Brent Doucette, Senior Project Manager.
