Jamail & Smith Construction completes City of Leander Fire Station No. 3 for July opening

(June 24, 2010 - Austin, Texas) - Jamail & Smith Construction is pleased to announce the completion of the City of Leander Fire Administration, Training and Station No. 3. The 16,000 SF facility was constructed on-time and under budget in collaboration with Moman Architects. Situated next to the Leander Police Station at Sonny Drive and US 183, the $4 million fire station includes administration offices and a learning center for in-house public safety training, complete with a burn tower.

Funding for the fire station was approved in the 2006 bond election; however, the original design exceeded the City’s budget. The City later chose to re-procure the project using Design-Build as the contracting method and Jamail & Smith Construction was selected as the Design-Builder.  Jamail & Smith Construction worked hand-in-hand with the owner to reduce the project cost, while retaining functional requirements, and was able to deliver the project within the original budget while maintaining the aesthetics of the initial design. "We recommended changes to the structural building envelope, the site work, air conditioning, electrical system, plumbing and interior finishes that shaved $1.5M off the project cost", said Darrell Smith, Vice President at Jamail & Smith Construction. "By altering material selections, adjusting site grading and framing the facility conventionally versus using a proprietary system, we were able to give the City exactly what they envisioned for the right price, without sacrificing quality," said Smith.  Despite an entire month of weather delays, the project was completed ahead of schedule.

The grand opening ceremony and open house is set to take place on Saturday, July 10th from 10:00 AM - 2: 00 PM. Representatives from the City of Leander, Jamail & Smith Construction, Moman Architects, the Leander Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor’s office and the Leander and Cedar Park Fire Departments will be in attendance. The event is open to the public and members of the community are encouraged to attend.  The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, tours of the facility, food, and live demonstrations. "We are looking forward to training in our new facility and being better prepared to serve Leander and surrounding areas," said Gardner.
